Urban Population - Philippines

The Philippines experiences a continues trend in the urban population recorded on a span of three decades:  31.8 percent in 1970, 37.5 percent in 1980 and 47.0 percent in 1990.

Regional Distribution

Except in NCR, which is entirely urban, the top 5 regions in terms of proportion of urban population were Region III, Region IV, Region XI, Region VII, and Region X. This was true in 1980 and 1990.

Number and Percent of Urban Barangays: 1990

  • The Philippines recorded a total of 17.75 percent barangays classified as urban.
  • Among the regions, excluding NCR, Region III had the highest proportion of urban barangays with 34.63 percent of the total barangays in the region.
  • Region IV closely followed with 26.08 percent urban barangays. Region IV and Region VII, on the other hand, recorded 19 percent urban barangays each.
  • Region II and Region VII had fewer barangays considered as urban. The former has 8.44 percent urban barangays while the latter has 10.02 percent urban barangays.

The 1970 Definition of Urban Area

  • In their entirety, all cities and municipalities which have a population density of at least 1,000 persons per square kilometer
  • Poblaciones or central districts of municipalities and cities which have a population density of at least 500 persons
  • Poblaciones or central districts, not included in 1 and 2 above, regardless of population size which have the following characteristics:
    1. Street pattern, that is, network of streets in either parallel or right angle orientation
    2. At least 6 establishments, either commercial, manufacturing, recreational &/or personal services; &
    3. At least three of the following:
      1. A town hall, church or chapel with religious services at least once a month;
      2. A public place, park or cemetery;
      3. A market place or building where trading activities are carried on at least once a week;
      4. A public building like a school, hospital, puericulture or health center or library
  • Barrios, having at least 1,000 inhabitants, which meet the conditions set forth in 3 above and in which the occupation of the inhabitants is predominantly non-farming/fishing
