Western Visayas comprises the
islands of Panay, Guimaras and Negros. Its total land area is 20,223
sq. km. approximately 6.7% of the national total. As of 2000 census, its
total population size is 6,211,038.
Administratively, the islands forming integral parts of Region VI are divided into six provinces; Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Guimaras, 16 cities, 116 municipalities and 4,048 barangays. The largest province Negros Occ. shares Negros Island with Negros Oriental of Region VII. Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Iloilo are located in Panay Island. Negros Occ. and Iloilo account for 65% of the regional area. Guimaras Island is the smallest province with total land area of 604.65 sq. km. situated between Panay and Negros islands. The Region has 16 cities, these are; Iloilo and Bacolod, classified as highly urbanized cities; Roxas City in Capiz; Bago, Cadiz, San Carlos, Silay, La Carlota and the newly established cities of Sagay, Escalante, Victorias, Kabankalan, Sipalay, Talisay and Himamaylan in Negros Occ., and Passi City in Iloilo province. Following the National Capital Region, Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon, Western Visayas contributed the 4th largest share to the country's Gross Domestic Product for 2000.
