Establishing A Migration Information Center in Talisay City
Talisay City is the latest highly urbanized municipality in Cebu that has been converted into a
city by virtue of RA 8979 on July 24, 2000. As the city is booming and fast developing, more and more people from the neighboring cities and municipalities are coming in to settle for good. This means
that more resources would be utilized and more wastes generated. There is a need for Talisay to operationalize strategies with multi-sectoral participation to integrate population variables, including
migration and urbanization into development policies, plans and programs.
The establishment of a Migration Information Center to monitor the population movement in the
city is a support mechanism to facilitate data-based policy formulation to address the problems and improve the delivery of basic social services to the public.
A grant of P80, 000 was given by RPO-7 to initiate the project in Talisay. The
project is pilot-tested in Barangay Tangke. Both the city and barangay councils have committed their support. Barangay health workers will be actively involved in the monitoring and have in fact been
tapped as enumerators for the conduct of the baseline survey on in-migrants.
The City Population Officer oversees the implementation of the project in coordination with its
Planning and Development Office as well as the Barangay Development Council of Tangke.
With the institutionalization of the MIC in Talisay, a balanced and rational spatial distribution
will be attained and urban growth be properly managed. #
